“The spirits exhaled, bringing anticipated relief. Atop the acacia’s highest limb a small brown bird of prey allowed its feathers to ruffle. Its accusing eye fell upon the dreamer as the streak of white faded into a blue-black abyss. The bird of prey took flight, riding the end of the cycle to higher places.
The dreamer stood and looked toward the setting sun. His cracked lips widened into a smile.

“Meet the XS-15,” said Alice.
“She’s a rocket plane. She looks fast,” Adrian said, noticing the twin rocket engine nozzles.
“She’s a hybrid. She has rocket engines and a traditional turbine jet engine. We designed her for single-stage horizontal take-off and landing. The XS-15 can reach the edge of LEO in eight minutes and launch small payloads, using our booster stage, into orbit with relative ease. It’s how we got the reentry pod to you.”
“It looks like she’s carrying LOX and methane for the rockets, and jet fuel for the turbines. Seems like a lot of her carrying capacity must be going towards fuel,” Adrian said.
“She gets lighter as she burns fuel, and once out of the atmosphere, the acceleration is exhilarating! Trust me—Braxton and I have been working on this for over a decade. We’ve thought of everything.”
“Adrian Bowman was the eighth Ranger in his deployment group, which oversaw the Golf quadrant of orbital space. Concentrating on slowing his breathing, Ranger 8 meticulously pulled his way across the main view port of the command deck of Orbital Ranger Station One. Being mindful of the tether that tied him to the station, Adrian searched for handholds that would pull him up and over the station to gain access to the drone docks.”
